Lesson 5 Intimacy and Independence

Intimacy is the key in a world of connection where individuals negotiate complex networks of friendships, minimize differences, try to reach consensus, and avoid the appearance of superiority, which would highlight differences.
人と人との結びつきの世界では親密さが鍵になる。そこでは一人一人が複雑な交友関係をやりくりし，相違点を最小限にし，合意に達しようと努め，また自分のほうが優れていることを見せないようにするが，それは相違点を目立たせることになるからである。

In a world of status, independence is the key, because a primary means of establishing status is to tell others what to do, and taking orders is a marker of low status.
地位を重んじる世界では，自主性が鍵になる。地位を確立する主要な手段は，人にするべきことを伝えることであり，命令を受けることは地位が低いことの目印になるからである。

Though all humans need both intimacy and independence, women tend to focus on the first and men on the second.
だれにでも親密さと自主性の両方が必要であるが，女性は前者に，男性は後者に重きをおく傾向がある。

It is as if their lifeblood ran in different directions.
それはまるで（女性と男性とでは）血液が違う方向に流れているかのようである。
