On Sunday October 30th, 1938, America was invaded by … would you believe? … men from Mars!
1938年10月30日の日曜日，アメリカが―あなたは信じられるだろうか―火星人によって侵略された。

While the nation sat around their radios (there were no televisions in those days), they heard the fearful news.
アメリカ国民はラジオの周りに座り（当時，テレビはなかった），彼らは恐ろしいニュースを聞いていた。

Horrible little men with death-ray guns in their hands had landed in New Jersey and were killing everyone in sight.
手に殺人光線銃を持った身の毛もよだつ小さな人たちがニュージャージーに着陸し，目に入った人間を1人残らず殺していた。

Hundreds of people had already died and the United States army was helpless.
すでに何百人もの人が死に，アメリカ軍は手も足も出なかった。

In fact, it was not only New Jersey, but all across America that space capsules were landing and blood-thirsty aliens were jumping out.
実のところは，ニュージャージーだけでなく，アメリカ全域に宇宙船が着陸し，血に飢えた異星人が飛び出してきていた。

People couldn’t believe their ears.
人々は自分の耳が信じられなかった。

As they sat and listened, the announcer screamed, “The Martians are now in Manhattan! This is the end of America!” They trembled with fear.
人々が座って聴いていると，アナウンサーが「今や火星人はマンハッタンに現れました。アメリカの終わりです」と叫んだ。人々は恐怖に震えた。
