Memory is the ability to remember something that has been learned.
記憶とはこれまでに学習されたことを覚えておく能力のことである。

Memory also refers to the brain’s ability to store information.

Memory is a vital part of the learning process.

If our brain recorded nothing, we would be unable to learn anything new.

Psychologists divide a person’s memory system into three types, each of which has a different time span.

For example, you use short-term memory when you look up a telephone number in the telephone book, and before you dial, you repeat the number over and over.

If someone interrupts you, you will probably forget the number.

In laboratory studies, subjects are unable to remember three letters after eighteen seconds if they are not allowed to repeat the letters to themselves.

In contrast, long-term memory can store facts, ideas, and experiences long after you stop thinking about them.

Information in long-term memory can be recalled at a later time when it is needed.

It may even be kept for a lifetime. Experts believe that by the time a person dies, the long-term memory has stored hundreds of times the amount of information in an encyclopedia.
